How to work out TV stand size?

When considering what size your TV stand should be, there are several things to think about. It’s not just about how much space you have, but also how big your TV is and where you want it to sit. It’s also suggested that the distance between your TV and seating area should be about twice the size of your screen, so keep this in mind when picking a TV stand.

How large should your TV stand be?

It’s important to remember that the size of your TV as stated on its box - for example, 50 inches - doesn’t necessarily show how much space it needs. Sizes are measured diagonally, so a 50-inch TV is measured from its top left corner to its bottom right corner - and this only includes the screen, not the frame. So, before you go shopping for a TV stand, measure the actual width of your TV and find a stand that will fit.

Should your TV stand be wider than your TV?

For balance and stability, make sure you have enough floor space for a TV stand that doesn’t stick out and has a strong base to support your TV. Our experts suggest adding 20% to the width of your TV when choosing your stand to prevent any issues. A sturdy oak TV stand will also provide enough weight to support your TV.

What is the best height for a TV stand?

Ideally, you want the screen to be at or just below eye level for comfortable viewing. As stands have different height options, you can adjust it to find the right height for you and your family to watch TV comfortably without straining your eyes or neck.

Thankfully, our TV stands are designed to complement the rest of our living room furniture beautifully.

What size should my TV stand be?

If you’re looking for guidance on TV stand size, look no further. TV stand dimensions are measured diagonally, so remember to account for the frame around the TV. TV stand sizes are recommended based on their width.

How to pick a TV stand

To decide on the right TV stand for you, it’s useful to know what options are available. As well as TV stands in oak or with a painted finish, there are various styles to choose from. Go for an industrial TV stand for a loft-style living look or opt for a white or grey TV unit for neutral tones. With many classic or modern oak TV stands on offer, you’re sure to find something to suit your home style. So, what should you look for in a TV stand? Here are a few things to consider.

Which room do I want the TV in?

If you’re looking for a bedroom TV stand, consider the height of your bed. If you have a low bed, any of our TV units will be suitable. However, a TV stand might not always work in your bedroom due to its height. You might wonder what else you can use instead of a TV stand? Try using the surface of one of our chest of drawers to place your TV on, allowing you to watch in bed at a more accessible height.

Do you need a corner TV stand?

While we offer regular large and small TV stands for various room sizes, we also have wooden oak corner TV units, which are great for awkwardly shaped rooms or if you want to keep your TV slightly off-centre.

Do you want a TV stand or other living room TV furniture?

Decide what works best for you. TV units help keep your space free of cables as they come with built-in tidying mechanisms, but this might not suit all spaces. Consider console tables, sideboards, or even a chest of drawers if they fit better with your scheme and needs. Just make sure to measure to ensure it’s at the right height.

FAQs

Can you use a console table as a TV stand?

Certainly, you can use a console table as a TV stand. Our console tables with shelves and drawers are particularly useful for storage. However, a console stand will only be suitable if you need your TV to be at a taller height than one of our TV units allows. Plus, it might not be as easy to hide wires as with purpose-built TV stands.

Should your coffee table match the TV stand?

If you prefer matching furniture, choose a TV stand from the same range as your coffee table and other living room furnishings. If you can’t get an exact match, go for a similar wood colour. But mixing and matching painted and oak furniture or different colour painted furniture can create an eclectic feel. Just ensure they tie in together with an underlying interior theme.

Can a TV hang over the stand?

Ideally, your TV should not be wider than 3 inches over each side of the TV stand to keep proportions right. But in some cases, it might be appropriate for it to overhang slightly more, especially if your TV stand style is heavier.

Can you use a coffee table as a TV stand?

In some cases, a coffee table may be too low to act as a TV stand. But depending on your sofa height, it might work! Make sure to measure before buying and ensure your TV height aligns with your seating.
